Let’s talk about the liahona. Mormons embrace this compass-like BOM object, often illustrating it with a very Jules Verne-esque steampunk ball. It is one of the most powerful metaphors, and without it the Mormons would not have reached America.

But that’s not how the Phoenicians navigated the seas in 500 BC. They used astronomy, currents and dead reckoning to rule the Mediterranean. They did not use a liahona. Solomon respected the Phoenicians for their skills, maintaining friendly trading relations with Hiram of Tyre (I Kings) in the Red Sea and the Mediterranean.

Did Lehi reinvent the science of navigation in 500 BC and launch out on a trans-atlantic crossing out of thin air? Wandering in the desert was poor training for what Hiram and Solomon were actually doing in 500 BC. The liahona appears to be a 19th century construct and not based on 500 BC navigation practice.

Going a bit further with this same idea, I wonder whether Lehi used common Phoenician trade ships for his expedition. Paul’s accounts in Acts give us a good picture of what sailing in the Mediterranean was like 500 years later. It was no picnic even sailing to Italy, and the ships were often laid up for months on a voyage. The Atlantic is far worse. The Phoenicians ventured out there but not to a great degree.

The BOM gives us no hints. There’s a sense that Lehi was crossing the Atlantic the way the Mayflower did, except that there was no Columbus going before him and he was doing it with 500 BC vessels. The ships were seaworthy enough for the Atlantic, but only in the hands of experienced sailors.
